In April 2003,SARS began running rampant in China. On the 7th of May, faced with the great threat, the university was commissioned to set up the Tangshan Municipal SARS Epidemic Prevention & Cure Investigation Team. Immediately after the stirring speech by Mrs. Tian Xiangli, vice secretary general of the Tangshan Party Committee, who inspected the school specially, a team, composed of 122 professors and lecturers, was sent to the various counties and districts in the city's precinct in five sub-teams.

Y!lan Juxiang, president of the school, was designated as vice director of the municipal anti-SARS leading group, and Liu Xinrong, the then vice-rector of the affiliated hospital, was appointed head of the team, and altogether 11 experts and professors from the university participated in the guidance and treatment.

On May 13th, the affiliated hospital formed a SARS prevention and cure group composed of 31 experts to be sent to Tangshan Lazarette, who entered the isolation area in zero touch with SARS patients.
On June 12th, the triumphant anti-SARS fighters were greeted with a warm welcome at a solemn ceremony held in their honor in the affiliated hospital's auditorium.
